maen.jpgThe Malaysian Automotive Enthusiasts Network (MAEN) had a very successful first gathering on July 22 at the National Extreme Park, National Sports Complex, Bukit Jalil.

The network, which aims for motoring enthusiasts to get to know others in the industry and to present the motoring community's cause in one, united voice, had a great start. About 20 car and bike clubs came for the gathering and officially registered with the secretariat, Motorsports Malaysia, in a festive atmosphere at about lunchtime. They also brought along many member's vehicles - ranging from souped-up street racers to fancy, air-brushed city cars.

All participants then took part in a forum, chaired by Motorsports Malaysia's GM Khaidi Kamaruddin. The objectives of MAEN were explained, and queries were answered. Clubs also raised issues and problems that they faced, like dealing with the authorities and permits for convoys. Khaidi said that a meeting between MAEN and the relevant authorities will be arranged soon to enable MAEN to bring up suggestions and problems in order to make things smoother for all parties.

The gathering then saw the arrival of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Ismail Sabri, who was there to lend his support as well as officiate the name change of the Family Park to National Extreme Park. The park will have three main elements - the Paintball Park, a golf driving range and KL MotoPark (www.motopark.com.my). .

MAEN supporters hung around and saw the minister take a tour of the booths on-site as well as the eye-catching vehicles of MAEN attendees. He was also treated to an exciting drift demo. This was followed by a makan session.

MAEN is now building its database of clubs in Malaysia. Once the list is large enough, MAEN will have the power to seek better milage for vehicle owners and clubs in all related areas. All clubs are encouraged to join now. When there are 50 clubs, MAEN will organize a meeting for all club presidents to discuss what we want, and then meet with the relevant private or government agencies.

The details of MAEN's next event or action will be put up when necessary at the MotoForum under the Clubs category.
